Alloderm (decellularized human cadaveric dermis) is increasingly being used for hernia repairs. In a recent study of 70 patients, 31 were men and 39 were women, with a mean age of 58 years old. Fifty-six patients (or 80 percent) had no complications, whereas 14 (or 20 percent) suffered one or more complications. Of those Alloderm patients with complications, there was one rejection, two infections, and 14 hernia recurrences. The overall complication rate was 24 percent.
A hernia happens when part of an internal organ bulges through a weak area of muscle. Most hernias occur in the abdomen. Hernias affect men, women, and children. The usual treatment for a hernia is surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall.
Complications that may occur with the materials used to repair hernias. Some of the complications include adverse reactions to the mesh, adhesions (when the loops of the intestines adhere to each other or the mesh), and injuries to nearby organs, nerves, or blood vessels. Other complications of hernia repair can occur with or without the mesh, including infection, chronic pain, and hernia recurrence.
