Central Pa. DePuy Hip Implant Revision Lawsuits

Recently DePuy Orthopaedics, a medical device division of Johnson & Johnson announced a voluntary recall of two hip implants. The ASR™ XL Acetabular System which was available in the United States and another hip implant which was not.

Since we in Central Pa., are only concerned with the DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular System, it would concern you further if your hip implant occurred after July 2003.

There are many different kinds of hip implants on the market but you should contact your doctor to find out what hip implant system you have. In a perfect world, your doctor or hospital should be attempting to notify you in order to return for a follow up visit. Patients with radiographic changes indicative of the hip implant failure will be addressed.

About 12 percent of patients who received the recalled DePuy hip implant may require a second, or what’s called, revision hip replacement surgery. While first hip replacements are usually successful, revision hip implant surgeries are more complicated. Older patients are less tolerant of longer surgical procedures and recovery time will be lengthier and more difficult.

This is bad news for patients and their families, orthopedic surgeons, hospitals, and Medicare. Who is going to pay for the costs associated with DePuy revision hip implant surgeries? Who can put a price tag on the mental health of the patient and his or her caregivers?
