The miracle of birth is a gift. But what happens when precious babies suffer birth defects caused by unsafe antidepressants prescribed to trusting pregnant women? Who should be held responsible?
GlaxoSmithKline the makers of Wellbutrin antidepressant conducted a Wellbutrin Pregnancy Registry from 1997 to 2008. A number of babies suffered serious heart birth defects. The women who suffered these birth defects took Wellbutrin one month before knowing they were pregnant or within the first trimester.
Some of the heart birth defects included coarctation of the aorta, pulmonary stenosis, atrial septal defect, abnormal aortic valve thickening, and right ventricular hypertrophy. These are all very serious conditions requiring specialized treatment, complex surgery, exponential care giving, and numerous and costly pharmaceutical drugs.
Who should be held responsible for the baby’s pain and suffering and the parents’ excessive medical bills?
The Central-PA-Lawyer thinks that GlaxoSmithKline should be held responsible.
Unsafe drugs can condemn the fate of babies as well as parents. According to the Wellbutrin Pregnancy Registry, no data was published by GlaxoSmithKline. No warnings were issued to doctors or patients. The FDA has not issued any safety alerts regarding the connection between Wellbutrin and baby birth defects.
